House Fire |
Judges' comments: Always a tough category and no single photo rose to the top.
First: First place went to a collection of three photos from a hardware/lumberyard fire that showed the actual fire as well as how it impacted the victims.
Second: Second went to an entry of two photos that captured emotion and showed first hand how the attacks of 9/11 impacted people.
Third: Third place went to a two photo package from a house fire that showed great hustle on the part of the photographer. |

Judges' comments: The attacks of 9/11 packed this category full of compelling images.
First: First place went to a tremendous image of a candlelight vigil like no other. This is an image that no one here had seen from the tragedies. It is well composed with ample darkness that adds to the overall mood of both helplessness and togetherness.
Second: Second Place went to a clean, well composed image of a woman overcome with emotion holding a large flag.
Third: Third place went to a timely image where the photographer made something great of nothing. This is a photo that we have all unsuccessfully tried to make. |

Football Facemask |
Judges' comments: This was a huge category dominated by football.
First:
The first place winner of an interception and touchdown eventually rose to the top. The ball carrier, leaping over the twice beaten quarterback for a touchdown, has the attention of every other eye in the photograph.
Second: Second place provided a clean action photo with neat lines created by the players arms.
Third: Third is a excellent nighttime football game. |

Freediver |
Judges' comments:
First: First place is a great image that would have done well in the general news category as well. It reminded us all of the famous photo from the end of World War II.
Second: Second place is a great rainbow photo that the photographer was clearly at the right place at the right time. We all agreed that these kind of photos just never seem to come together, the photographer must have good karma.
Third: Third place is a neat underwater image with nice lines and smooth composition. We like the use of the tilted horizon. |

Polka |
Judges' comments:
First: The first place winner represents a collection of well composed and carefully edited images that also included some great moments. There obviously was a great deal of trust between the photographer and subjects.
Second: Second place consisted of a collection of hard hitting portraits that went way beyond the surface of their lives and shed light on their troubled pasts.
Third: Third place went to a wonderful collection of polka dancing images. We loved the variety of photos. |

Judges' comments: This was a fun category to judge. We went back and forth between the first and second place winners. Both were technically sophisticated and well executed.
First: We found the night fashion package full of spontaneity and liveliness.
Second: Second place is a dynamic package of well executed and interesting pre-season football location portraits. The project clearly represents a lot of time and hard work, hopefully some fun too.
Third: Third is a moody collection of images. This really looked like it was fun to shoot. |
