Sifting Through Storm's Ruins
|
Judges' comments: This category seemed one of the smallest, the best images fell into place quickly.
First: This was the most non-expected but so refreshing. An excellent storyteller so much more effective in our estimation than a gurney carrying a body bag to an ambulance. The photographer excelled, showing the sense of loss, the loss of innocence, in a sensitive, personal way without intrusion.
Second: This was a nice reaction and sense of shock and helplessness, a reaction to loosing her home.
Third: A nice personal moment sorting through the remains of a young girl's bedroom after a tornado.

Judges' comments: Good category, some very nice images that were fresh looks at some pretty common, difficult to illustrate daily assignments.
First: Wonderful, layered look at a victory in the state senate. A quiet, nicely layered with all the key players. Very nice storyteller.
Second: A difficult assignment. The photographer captured the frustration very well that this individual was living with. Intimacy made us feel like we were sharing it with him.
Third: Event coverage. Nice crop, interesting light and photographer was ready and made an interesting image out of an event we may often cover year after year.

Judges' comments: Some very nice pictures in this category that led to some extended discussion. A split between the staff on the first and second place pictures. Difficult to judge the peak sports action against the much more subtle sports feature that eventually took second place..
First: Great action, clean background, excellent moment and expression. Total package that received nice play from its publication..
Second: This was more making something out of nothing. Nice layering of foreground and background moment. An event the photographer could have come back with nothing. Great effort and excellent storyteller that filled the void as the event was postponed due to rain.
Third: Great moment with peak action. A wonderful image made in the first inning of a baseball game that could have received much better play from his sports department.

Judges' comments: A half-dozen very good images rose to the top. We had lots of discussion with this category about the merits of all the individual images. Documentary seemed to jump out at us, the more traditional images falling out of the running.
First: Nice graphic memorial day feature that centered around a wonderful moment. The choice was nearly unanimous with most of the discussion revolving around second and third.
Second: An artistic moody picture that these qualities and its composition took it to 2nd.
Third: This entry was a difficult call as a vote brought it to place. This photo won over a potato-passing moment on a vote of one. The moment and unexpected, fitting leap made it fly over the "more expected moment" of the other image those voting for it said. |

Judges' comments:
First: This package took us on a musical journey through Louisiana and the pictures worked well together even though the design and layout kind of fought this. The images were fun and the photographer seemed to find interesting angles, light, moments and variety to carry it through without being repetitive. Most of the pictures seemed to belong and work towards storytelling.
Second: This was more issue reporting that didn't seem as photo driven. There were a number of wonderful images but the number of portraits that were included and interview type images, the lack of any real extensive in-depth look at any individual took this to second.
Third: Tightly edited, beautifully shot piece. We loved the photography, style, feel and mood of the photos. Overall though, we felt it wasn't as developed as it could have been with the boys arrival home, adjustment and the events that happened afterwards.
Still, all three photographers to be commended.
