Trailer Fire
Judges' comments: Weak Category, many entries seemed to not fit the category.
We kept on wanting to see peak spot news. Althought they were nice photos on their own, good daily work, most entries were after the fact. The top three either showed peak spot news and/or had good composition and story-telling qualities.
First: Stuck out because of the toilet in the trailer. A little different spot news picture.
Second and Third: Good spot news photos.

Ripples of Loss
Judges' comments: Another fairly weak category. Again, some photos just didn't fit the category.
First: Caught everyone's eye first. The nice confident look on the boy's face was the seller for us.
Second: Just a nice moment with the grandmother grieving with the officer.
Third: A nice story-telling photo of a funeral.

Warming up for the Season
Judges' comments: The category was packed with good daily work but few rose above that.
First: The obvious choice for all of us. Nice emotion, peak moment, in the right spot at the right time.
Second: The fireball engulfing the pit crew member was a solid second place.
Third: A good collection of photos from the start of a baseball season.

Rainy Day
Judges' comments: As usual, this category was packed. Many, many photos to choose from.
First: Grabbed us right away. Very nice composition, nice moment and the woman's weathered skin just makes the picture sing. Nice work. We all agreed that it was a shame it ran so small.
Second: A strong composition weather feature.
Third: The quietness and painting-like qualities kept it in.

Wade Prison
Judges' comments: This category took a lot more deliberation. We boiled it down to four entries fairly quickly and decided the fourth one was just too long to make it in the top three. There were 20 nice pictures in that story but if the photographer would have weeded these down into a solid storyline it might have made it. Too broad to get a handle on the intent of the story/photographer.
First: Took the honors because it looked like the photographer really worked the story. Very nice photojournalism.
Second: Second and Third were harder to place. Second won out because we thought the storyline was the stronger of the two.
Third: The last picture was a good and unusual ender for a prison story.

They're Called Boots, Ed
Judges' comments:
First: An immediate winner. Very nicely done and good illustration for eating ribs.
Second: A nice illustration for the story it accompanied on sodas robbing teens of calcium. Good thinking.
Third: The entire section play that Third received was envious. Very good way to illustrate boots. Nice photos.
