| Judges' Comments: This was a very average category, we thought there were a lot of missed opportunities among the entries. The winners were solid though, and we arrived at them very quickly. We thought the image of students being arrested after a high school cafeteria brawl merited a nod for nice work |

Chaos In Kabul Mona Reeder Dallas Morning News Dallas, TX Caption: A crowd of thousands pushed and shoved their way into the sold-out "Game of Unity" soccer match between the British ISAF team and Kabul United. Fans made their way into the walled compound area where ISAF troops were searching people before they entered the Stadium. Many were crushed in the mob of thousands that crowded around the walls. ISAF eventually fired warning shots and used dogs to get the unruly crowd under control and back out of the area before the game. The ISAF team won the match 3 to 1. Judges' Comments: We liked the photographer's ability to react to the evolving chaos in this entry. This looked like a tough shoot which was handled well and produced strong work. |

![]() Priest Comforts Fire Victim John Rowland The Daily Advertiser Lafayette, LA Caption: Father Jerome Frey says a prayer with Gladis Stevens as Lafayette Fire Fighters try to contain a fire in a shed behind her house at 505 Lafayette Street Photographer's Comments: I responded to a call for the fire department on the scanner and got some nice shots of the fire. The fire was at the back of the house so when it was almost under control. Then I went out front and saw the priest and the woman. This scene lasted about 5 seconds and then it was over. I thought this was much better than the firemen battling the blaze. Judges' Comments: Wonderful moment. We liked that the photographer stayed away from the grieving victim and chose the more subtle moment. Great awareness shown by the shooter. |

![]() Afghanistan's Children Mona Reeder The Dallas Morning News Dallas, TX Caption: A relative prepares the body of eight-month-old Madina (she did not have a last name as is often the case in Afghanistan) for burial in a roadside cemetary in the village of Deh Khuidiadad outside side of Kabul, Afghanistan. She died of pneumonia when her family, refugees from the Shimali area, couldn't afford to buy the anti-biotics she needed to live. The infant mortality rate in Afghanistan is one of the highest in the world. Judges' Comments: AWe debated between this photo and the photo of Rev. Frank Howard, a well done protrait that struck as more than your average subject in front of a camera. It ultimately lost out to the weight of the news, but it was close. The image we chose is a sad image that came across with power. Nice job by phtographer. |

| Judges' Comments: Much stronger category but too many pedestrian sport action photos. Nice try by Sobhani to get a unique angle from a swim meet. Technically it was just off, or it would have been a winner. |

| Judges' Comments: This category can be overwhelming when you first see thenumber of multiple page entries. Less is generally more if you don't have the depth in your project to cary multiple pages. Get a good edit and don't fill a space just because it is there. First and second grew on us. An ambitious project by two photographers that showed great collaboration, attention to detail and the kind of variety you want to see in a project that spans days. The fact that the two projects were related but didn't overlap much speaks well of the editing and the photographers' willingness to accept it. |
