Judges' comments:
First: The color helps this powerful event taken at the right moment.
Second: This photographer was thinking and looked for a different way to shoot the gang funeral. A tighter crop on the left would have increased the impact.
Third: Photographer was patient in waiting for this moment of the man looking through the burned-out mobile home. Caption should have said more about him to give context.

Campfire at Dusk
Judges' comments:
First: Captures a candid school moment of kindergarten relationships.
Second: Beautiful pictorial that sets a strong sense of mood. Shot very cleanly but would benefit by cropping from the bottom.
Third: Good capture of an anxious moment between student and teacher. Very nice photo from a potentially dull subject.

Judges' comments: Each of the winners in this category should have made better use of different camera angles and different lenses to propel readers through their stories. They were strong collections of individual pictures but didn't do enough to explore the relationships of the subjects to their surroundings or each other. The Third place boxing story did this best but First and Second had much more interesting subjects, minor league hockey and substandard housing.
