Burning Dreams |
Judges' comments: The judges closely examined this category because of the number of pictures published small. Nothing very unusual in teh type of pictures entered. However, the winners stood on their own.
First: A photograph that communicates the tragedy of life. The photographer acted spontaneously to the situation and because of that the picture works.
Second: The photographer did a good job in focusing on the agony of the situation
Third: Simply a wonderful picture that scales weight in composition. The judges appreciated the symbolism the picture portrays of one man battling a fire by himself. |

Judges' comments: There were a number of good sports pictures entered in this category. The winners were determined not only for teh photographic merits but also for the content of news each possesed
First: What a great picture, full of life and celebration. It is not easy to make such a picture under such lighting conditions. The photographer was alert with a certain love of the game. We liked this picture as soon as we saw it.
Second: Confrontations are not easy to photograph, sometimes. And in sports, the photographer must be prudent and aggressive at the same time. Here, this image illustrates teh alertness the photographer had during the event.
Third: This photograph was controversial during the course of judging. Though it is not visually beautiful, it earned itself among the winners because of the timing the photographer had and the acument to news. |

Judges' comments:
The selection of teh winners was obvious because they possesed such presence and zest for life.
First: What makes this picture special is the mood it communicates. It is quiet, beautiful in color and conceptual in composition. We enjoyed feeling through the graphic journey the image allowed us to take and the blue hue of the image relaxed and cooled us off after a tough afternoon on the field. Thank you.
Second: What fun. Good timing and good use of lense to convey a fun day at the pool. The girl about to jump to the pool is absolutely adorable and we fell for her as much as we think the photographer did when the picture was taken.
Third: The body and mood conveyed through this image is what sailed it above the rest. |

Battles Of A Different Kind |
Judges' comments:
This was the most challenging category to judge because it was difficult to choose teh winners by first, second and third. It took the judges almost one hour to come to a decision about the winners of this category and some heated debate about editing, the significance of news picture stories, the theories of the picture story and the picture essay, and overall good photography. We would like to say that all three are winners, but we had to put them in order. Kudos to all three photographers and for their excellence in picture making. Also, kudos to the picture editors involved in the process, for the selection of pictures and their visual narrative.
First: Excellent photograph. A fine handle of teh mechanics and the environment in which the photographer place herself. We argued and debated this entry for a long time. Everything shot here was solidly executed and the handle of the lense was more than creative, it was true craftmanship. A picture story that brings the reader to a place whith color, excitement and drama.
Second: For any photographer on assignment abroad, the challenge is to convey a point of view without interference. from an editor or reporter. The content of teh news reported through this essay was strong and it evoked response from the judges. We thought the photographer made great efforts to tell the story from his point of view and that in itself held high merits with the judges.
Third: We absolutely loved the editing here. The photographer made a series of excellent images that showed us an aspect of foreign life not seen before. The editing, however, was poingnant and effective and made it a tough contender. |

Multicolors Instead |
Judges' comments: It was fun to view some very good illustrations and to choose the winners of this category. We encourage photographers to pull all the stops when illustrating. It is a difficult skill in the editorial world. However, the illustrations that convey an artistic or editorial message carry a powerful voice.
First: Artistry and the theme of the story was conceptually executed and beautifully delivered.
Second: This was a simple, but thoughtful way of illustrating a social issue.
Third: Fun colors and good use of the tools at hand. |
