Photos Salvaged from Fire |
Judges' comments: Overall, the smallest category in quantity of images and picture use. Spot News photos in Region 8 were, overall, used 60-percent smaller in their newspapers than sports or feature pictures. We felt this reflects part of the problem with NEWSpapers today when our bread and butter photojournalism is not played larger than two or three columns. Picture editors in Region 8 should be told this.
First: A standout and great news photo. Richard Alan Hannon captured the grief of a family at the scene of what was apparently a homicide. The cutline was a little unclear.
Second: Michael Ainsworth blew us away but could hardly see it. Perhaps it was used small because it was shot with a long lens, enlarged greatly and wouldn't hold up to larger play. If not, The Dallas Morning News should be ashamed of their play of this image.
Third: A family sorting through their pictures after a fire. A good news photo that rarely gets taken.
We also liked the drowning photo by Kim Ritzenthaler. It was also incredibly small and used in The Dallas Morning News. |

Storm Damage |
Judges' comments: This was the weakest category in overall caliber of images.
First: Jumped out at us be we had to search for the other winners. First by Rodolfo Gonzalez was a touching moment full of emotion - something lacking in the category overall.
Second: Barton Cromeens' photo kept catching our eye as something different and eerie and we felt it fit the story well.
Third: Carlos Antonio Rios' picture was a solid general news photo of people looking through the broken window of their house after a storm. The expressions seemed genuine and made the image for us. |

Tearful Loss |
Judges' comments: This was a powerful category that was challenging to judge. Lots of routine sports action - good daily type photos - but not eye catching.
First: Christobal Perez's photo was a simple image that any good shooter could have taken but Perez DID it. It jumped out as an automatic First Place.
Second: Cops helping an overheated runner by Michael DeMocker was one of two race photos being seriously consered but this was the best.
Third: C. Somodevilla's image of crying girls after losing a tough game was composed well and captured great emotion.
We also really liked the visual appeal of two sychronized divers by U. Frank Williams , Jr. from the Midland Reporter-Telegram. |

Downtown Tango |
Judges' comments: We felt this was the strongest category and the greatest strength of Region 8 in April. We could have easily awarded six places to some very nice moments that reflect why most of us got into this business.
First: A touching photo in a day care taken by Stacia Spragg. The news hook to the photo could have made it compete well in the general news category where such images were lacking.
Second: Rodolfo Gonzalez's photo was a nice moment of a daughter/father walking down a path as seen from behind them.
Third: Chris Schneider showed us an example of how less can be more. We didn't need to see the man's tango partner.
A photo by Matthew Minard from the Shreveport Times caught our eye but we didn't know what the dog had to do with the story, it was just odd. We also liked the girls avoiding the puddle by John Everett from the Houston Chronicle. |

Prom Night |
Judges' comments: Not a strong category but the few entries provided some good packages. Overall, perhaps too many pretty pictures and not enough story telling. Photographers need to edit their work better.
First: Jarry Lara's was the best and most in-depth story. It was a look at a church-operated home where men and women can try to kick their drug habits. it contained some powerful images that would have done well any month.
Second: Andrew Innerarity provided a well-handled and powerful look at Sudanese refugees living in America.
Third: Khampha Bouaphanh's story on prom night has been done by every paper at least once but it still had some nice pictures that flowed well as a package. |
