| True Assets Sitting down to write my first column as NPPA president, I reflect on the legacy of the past 60 years, and the many great presidents who have served this organization. I am humbled in the shadow of greatness and it's an honor to continue what they began.
As we close out the previous year and look ahead to the next one, Our budget is like a roadmap for the association. In it are the plans and priorities for the coming year. We have added funding to expand our efforts advocating for photographers rights. We are expanding the Flying Short Course to fund a second day of local speakers at each stop (Boston, MA; Austin, TX; and Eugene, OR) and we are upgrading the Best of Photojournalism publication to be a perfect bound edition this December. Our world class contest continues to grow, our magazine continues to provide extraordinary industry insight, and we continue to provide great educational events. Although much could be said about the finances of our organization, it is our outline, not our essence. Between the lines of the budget are our greatest assets - the people that convert the numbers into events, programs and services. What makes the NPPA strong and enduring, even in recent lean times, are you, the members; particularly those of you who are among the amazing team of dedicated volunteers. Many members aren't aware of the enormous pool of talent behind the numerous services that the NPPA provides. Indulge me a moment. There are 32 active committees, each with chairs and several members. There are 18 board members and 11 regional Associate Directors. And that is just the tip of the NPPA volunteer iceberg. When you aren't shooting football, or covering hurricanes, or doing live shots, you are behind the scenes, mentoring young photographers, fighting for a free press, planning events, and managing contests. When you see an opportunity, you step up to the plate. Because of this, you make a difference to the organization and to the profession. You know who you are. If you have ever helped organize an event, contributed to your regional website, judged a clip contest, or served on a committee, you are responsible for the success of NPPA. And if you haven't - you are missing out.
My thanks to all of you.
